As we head face first into December, it’s time to think about winter decor ideas and how we can cosy up the house with the addition of some home accessories. It’s not just the Christmas tree that makes the home feel cosy, it’s the addition of textures, tones, smells and soft subtle lighting that will really help take your home from autumnal to winter wonderland.
Adding texture
It’s all about the velvet this year. Velvet cushions are a lovely warm and welcoming addition to any sofa. Look out for extra details such as quilting and pom poms for an eye pleasing texture boost.
Also consider adding a rug to warm up any hard flooring and think about picking a jute hard wearing rug, as the straw colour is not only huge this winter, but it brings a little touch of outdoor in and also builds on layering those textures within your home.
Time to heat up
Now is always the time of year where people consider adding a wood burning stove, but if that isn’t possible, then look out for stylish electric fireplaces which also add the same warm and cosy feel to your home… Make sure you have a blanket and cup of hot chocolate at the ready though. Once you are in front of the fireplace, time just melts away!
Lighting
It goes without saying that as the dark nights roll in, the last thing you want to do it switch on the “big ceiling light”. You will want to create the perfect ambiance for your cosy nights in. Consider installing a dimmer light, adding lamps, or my absolute favourite… Light lots and lots of candles.
I love candles this time of year, as they not only add a gorgeous soft light in winter, but also add those favourite smells that immediately take you back to the fondest of memories of Christmases past.
Snuggle up
Winter is always when people consider changing up their main furniture pieces, such as sofas and occassional chairs. You might find if you are making the investment in a log burner or fireplace, that your focal point changes in your room and you have to rearrange the seating to suit.
Things to bear in mind when chosing new seating and sofas in particular is shape, colour and filling. Do you want a firm sofa that will hold it’s shape and perhaps soften with cushions, or do you want a sinkable sofa for those cosy movie nights and are happy to plump up the seat cushions regularly. Think hard on these big investment pieces.
