If you read my blog regularly, you will know we have been stuck in renovation Groundhog Day for over a year now. So when Gumtree challenged me to renovate my hallway and see how much I could save compared to the high street, I jumped at the chance.
We are quite lucky to have a good sized square front hall. However, it lacks storage. The house has a sizeable double cupboard at the back door. Great for coats and shoe storage for a family of 4. However the location isn’t ideal and bad habits of strewn jackets and shoes quickly followed.
As you know, the cost of home renovations can add up and it’s easy for budgets to get depleted quickly when buying larger pieces of furniture. Research by Gumtree showed that it costs the average Brit £1,560 to move in and acquire those all-important items of furniture.
First up was to find a solution for shoe storage that would tick the box of my inner Monica and hide them out of sight, but also fit in with the style and vibe of the room. I had my eyes open for something industrial and was delighted when I found an army trunk that was perfectly sized for the job. It came up at £35 on Gumtree, when the equivalent on the high-street can cost anything up to £100.
Next up I really wanted to find a chest of drawers. I wanted something that had a good shape to it, looked great in its original state, but would also look stunning if we did decide to go ahead and take some chalk paint to it in the future. I sifted through all the bedroom furniture in the local area on Gumtree until I came across exactly what I was looking for.
I knew from the shape it was the Lebus chest of drawers I had been so desperately looking for. They cost us £50, but I know from cross checking on auction sites that the exact same drawers go for anywhere between £100-£200 depending on condition.
The biggest challenge of all was locating a solution for coats. After trawling Google Images for industrial coat stands, I found exactly what I was after. However, there was no brand name associated. This was the hardest to find and I went through nationwide searches and priced up shipping costs for the few that I located in the South of England. I struck gold however when one of my Gumtree alerts found a replica one locally.
I was delighted, as now we didn’t have to pay extortionate shipping costs, which were being quoted at £100. We paid £110 for the coat stand and I’m delighted with it, as it’s such a unique piece and using the alert feature on Gumtree meant that I saved on the shipping costs.

Nothing beats finally putting a room together, especially that all important entrance hall. It’s spurred me on to make that last push around the rest of the house.
Other items I love on Gumtree include:
• I’m looking for 2 statement chairs for our master bedroom and I’m eyeing up this pair of Ercol chairs for £75
• Love these SEIJE bedside tables from Ikea, that are only £10 each on Gumtree.
• If you are up for an upcycle project, then what about this stunning Parker Knoll sofa. Look at that classic shape, £120.
