If you know me well, you’ll know I’m a MASSIVE Volkswagen buff, so I was in my element at the thought of an adventure in a Volkswagen California… Which for those of you who don’t know, the California is the modern day Volkswagen iconic Campervan.
Given that we are based up North, it made sense to venture to the Highlands & West Coast of Scotland. Aviemore is somewhere we both frequented as children and so we had to pop that on the agenda for nostalgia sakes. It really hasn’t changed in the 15 odd years since we last went. But we went on explore Glenmore, Fort William and based ourselves near Glen Coe in Ballachuish for the large part of our trip.
I hadn’t been on the West Coast, from what I remember and my jaw dropped around every bend. It was just picture postcard after picture postcard of snow capped hill tops, lochs and woodlands. I literally could have stopped at every parking place for photos, but that would have been highly impractical.
The Volkswagen California Ocean, which Clark Commercials kindly loaned us, was the perfect travel companion. MM was so excited that we were going “on the bus” and the space for travelling around was second to none. Not only could we fit all our stuff in (and all the stuff you need for a toddler and a 6 year old), but all of us had masses of room to stretch out on the road and have everything on hand. Given that I was filming, I even had my box of equipment in between the driver and passenger seat, plus all the snacks any kid could want!
Being a campervan, we had amenities such as a fridge, freezer, gas hob, sink and running water, as well as 2 sleeping areas on board for most eventualities. The roof is operated via a button and reveals the top level sleeping area, which importantly “nets off”, so you don’t have to worry about anyone falling out. Whilst the back seat transforms into a lower level bunk. It’s great that in something the size of a people carrier you have the functionality to have 2 sleeping areas, meaning no compromising. If you want to watch our adventure, I’ve popped a video up, which I really enjoyed editing into a family memory to cherish forever.
I can’t not mention all the lovely Cali drivers we met on the way. I didn’t realise it’s a bit of a club and there were plenty of waves and we were in prime California country for sure! You can find our more about VW Campervan hire on Clark Commercials Camper rental site.
We have certainly found a future family vacation spot in the West Coast. We completely fell head over heels for the local area of Ballachuish. There are so many quaint seafood restaurants, walks, sports (if that’s what you’re into) and I actually felt rather sentimental that we have found somewhere we can return to year after year and build up those all important memories and hopefully nostalgia for the girls in years to come when they grow up.
We felt like we were completely shut away from all the daily strains. I could have happily lived that week over and over again. But we can’t stay forever and so we enjoyed a scenic return back to reality via Loch Ness and Nairn… Stopping off for sandy walks and fish and chips. This is one I won’t be forgetting for a long time.
