It’s hard to believe it but MM is now 10 months old. To me that is getting all too close to the 1 year old mark and then the baby days are over. It’s been an absolute whirlwind this time round. I think purely because you have experience on your side, so you know roughly when things will happen and that it will all happen eventually.
We’ve been on our weaning journey with MM now since she was 5 months. We started to wean early due to reflux (we had to do the same at 17 weeks with Munch). So a little bit later than her sister. This was purely down to the fact we had no kitchen!
MM has really enjoyed the weaning process. She had already settled to having 3 bottles a day (with a 4th at bedtime), so it was easy to slot in the first tastes. We started with porridge 3 times a day (made up from her standard milk feed) at her usual feed times and followed afterwards with what was left of her milk. It’s hard not to compare…I noticed very early on that her appetite is tiny in comparison to her sister at the same age. But every baby is different. When she turned 6 months, we moved on to SMA PRO Follow-on Milk. It contains Nutri-Steps® with iron to help build a nutritional foundation for life. At the important stage MM is at, we want her to benefit from the additional Iron to help support normal cognitive development, Vitamin D and Omega 3 & 6. It’s such an amazing age of discovery and jam packed with milestones, so the nutrition she gets from milk alongside her weaning foods is key.
She was due to start nursery at the start of May, so I was mindful to make any changes before she started. I couldn’t imagine them going along with my ‘put half her milk in a bottle, then half in a cup’ malarkey. So we integrated a sippy cup from the start for both water and milk feeds, which took a bit of getting used to…for us both! Although I still save the milk until the end and still give her those milky snuggles that we both enjoy so much.
MM is loving food so far though. We do a mix of blended meals and finger foods. Some key likes are banana…most fruit actually. In terms of savoury foods, so far she won’t eat spaghetti bolognese…blended, not blended, out a pouch…just not having any of it. She will eat it without the mince though (which is great, as I hate mince too!)
In April she dropped her final bottle at bedtime. One night she only took 1 ounce and then refused it the next night…at which point I transferred it into a cup and she took an ounce. The night after that we read her a story instead and sang a little song before putting her down and that was it, the last bottle…just like that.
It’s odd to think that as time whizzes past, so are the baby days. I’m such a worrier, so making little changes to routines such as moving her into a cot, weaning etc. really get my agitated. So I should be happy, calm and thankful…but the grass is never greener, as I’ll always miss those little sleepy baby snuggles at night.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Breast milk is best for babies and breastfeeding should continue for as long as possible. SMA PRO Follow-on Milk is for babies over 6 months, as part of a varied weaning diet. Not intended to replace breastfeeding.
