Ikea Expedit discontinued?! (Insert shocked smiley face here). The Ikea Expedit is one of my favourite pieces of furniture. In fact, I am the proud owner of 7 two by two white Ikea Expedits in my house and even have my eye on the desk for the office.
I’m not alone. A ‘Save The Expedit’ facebook page has been set up, showing great sadness for this news. This extremely versatile piece of furniture has a mass following. People love to personalise their Expedit. There are over 48,000 results for Ikea Expedit Hacks. There are endless combinations that you can place together to fit most spaces. Complete with a range of fantastic baskets, doors and drawers to boot, the Ikea Expedit is the organisers staple item. Storing the Nations clothes, toys, files and bits & pieces…well everything!
However, although there is little that can be done to save the Expedit’s fate. It’s not all doom and gloom. There is a fairly identical replacement lined up.
Deemed to be more scratch resistant (not an issue I’ve ever had) and with more child friendly corners, the Kallax will have the same interior dimensions to fit your favoured Expedit accessories. Perhaps the most noticeable change though and one I’m not overly keen on, is that the characteristic chunky outside edge will be made thinner in the bid to be more eco friendly.
I for one love the chunkier edge of the original Expedit. It makes it look a bit more sturdy and more expensive. What do you think?
Although Ikea call the Kallax ‘the new name for Expedit’, I’ll be snapping up my Expedit desk before they are all gone. If you have an outstanding project, or want to make a combination using an existing Expedit, I’d recommend you do the same.
Happy panic buying!
