If you read regularly, you’ll know how long it is taking to finish off the family room to allow me to do a full room tour, so for now…I will allow you to see a finished section of the kitchen…The breakfast bar!

The original kitchen layout (below) was pretty much identical, with a kitchen island, so we decided to keep that.  It was a nice ‘hub’ of the kitchen.  We would sit around it at the end of the day and eat a snack and talk about what we’d been up to.  The last island however didn’t have a deep enough leg space, which was rather annoying, so we wanted to make sure we got as wide a worktop here as possible.

Above is the original kitchen (estate agent picture…sorry about the size, I wanted to show you the transformation)

After many a pinterest binge, we decided we wanted accent coloured doors on the island, as well as the oven wall and opted for the gloss flint grey against the remainder of the kitchen, which is white.  In hindsight I think we could have got away with the darker graphite grey as the accent colour (I originally worried this would be too dark for the room), but then I don’t think it would have worked with the island worktop we chose.

The worktop on the island is actually doubled up to give a chunky effect.  After seeing it in the brochure, I had to have it!

As I am mad for all things industrial in the home decor department, I went with quite a rustic looking laminate flooring in this room.  I love how it’s all different colours and I’m amazed at how much it looks like real wood.  Almost like it’s been here all along.

When it came to picking bar stools, there was really no choice…I had been eyeing up the industrial metal Xavier P Tolix style stools since we got the kitchen over 18 months ago.  It was great to add them as a final piece of our island jigsaw.

They really are great, stylish and functional.  With a 4 year old in the house, things can get pretty messy when food is involved and there are no worries with these stools, as they just wipe clean.

Rather than opt for the high gloss option, we chose the natural finish, which are left with the welds and patina effect on them…I love them even more!

It’s just so nice to have our little social space back!

  1. They look awesome and so practical too. Can’t wait to see the rest of the room. I can see why you wanted to change the kitchen.

  2. Ahh, love this! With the amount of lights in that room I’m not surprised you could have gotten away with darker. Our kitchen is so dark already if we put those colours in it would not look good. Yours looks so fab though. I’m not jealous at all….
