It’s the first Bloggers’ Homes of 2016…in fact it’s been a while, due to my pregnancy with MM…But we’re back! Bloggers’ Homes has been given a smidge of a revamp too. You can now link up your homes posts each month (more about that later!)
For the first feature of the year, Tayla from Motherhood: The Real Deal (facebook, twitter) is taking us on a tour of her living room. I adore the colouring (big mustard fan!) and the tiling around the fire place…this room definitely has features. Anyway enough from me…over to Tayla…
What you love most about the room
I love this room because although it is really small for a living room, we have managed to make it feel really vivacious and full of life without it feeling cluttered and overbearing. When we first moved into the house, I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about having such a small living room, but I think the size and decor make it feel really lovely and welcoming and with a great energy, rather than a living room we have just tried to cram everything into. I also love the fact that is such an eclectic mix of everything – it fuses together things from our travels and time spent living in Asia – like the propaganda prints from Vietnam and the huge painting from Thailand – with treasures we have picked up from our life and travels in the UK like the Vespa plaque we picked up in an antiques and collectables shop in Lincolnshire, and the Audrey Hepburn print from Notting Hill Market.
In terms of favourite features, it has to be fireplace hands down. We were really lucky that the beautiful Victorian fireplace was in place when we moved in, but nothing had been done to the area underneath it – which was literally just cracked grey cement with a whole in it that was full of random food wrappers, nail clippings and strange little toys! This was a classic “it’ll only take a weekend job” which went on for weeks although I can not take credit for it. It was my partner’s amazing patience and not-so-usual attention to detail we have to thank for it. He spent hours and hours making sure the tiles were all cut to the right size and shape and that they were laid in the right pattern. Hats off to him! I love the whole look of the fireplace with the mirror over it, which really does help to make the roomier than it is – a classic interior design strategy!
What you wish you did differently (if anything)
So far nothing within the confines of the space! But the room is only fairly new to us – under a year, so I am sure if you asked me in another year’s time my response would be very different! However, if we had more room to play with, my dream would be to have a swing seat suspended from the ceiling to relax on….one day! I think there will still be some changes we want to make – for example, thinking about whether we swap out the window frosting for cafe shutters or perhaps an updated Victorian print frosting.
What room is next on your list.
Our spare room is still a bit of a hodgepodge – as they often are, and I think will be the next to really get right. I tend to add to rooms slowly over time until they feel absolutely right so it’s always a bit of a work in progress rather than a massive overhaul!
